Veteran diplomat Kim Jae-shin heads ASEAN-Korea Centre

SEOUL, May 21 (AJU PRESS) - Kim Jae-shin, a veteran diplomat who served as Korea's top envoy to the Philippines and Germany, has assumed the position of the sixth secretary-general of the ASEAN-Korea Centre.

He took office on April 16 to head the Seoul-based intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting exchanges between Korea and the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Kim, who majored in political science at Korea University, joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980. During the Lee Myung-bak administration (2008–2013), he served as deputy foreign minister and presidential secretary for foreign affairs.

Kim served as ambassador to Germany from 2012 to 2015 and as ambassador to the Philippines from 2015 to 2017.

The ASEAN-Korea Centre was established in 2009 to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, culture, and tourism. ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Viet Nam.
