SEOUL, June 12 (AJU PRESS) - Experts are warning that the Korean Peninsula can no longer be regarded as a safety zone for earthquakes, after a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck an area 4 kilometers southwest of Buan, North Jeolla Province at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) initially reported the magnitude of the earthquake as 4.7, but later revised it to 4.8 after a detailed analysis.
About 300 people reported sensing the tremors, but no major damages or injuries were reported.
Wednesday's earthquake was the strongest to hit the Korean Peninsular this year, after the last earthquake with a magnitude 4.5 or higher, which occurred in Gangwon Province about a year ago.
Many geologists point to an increase in seismic activity and geological changes as reasons to be prepared for stronger earthquakes, urging the need for contingency plans to deal with potential disasters.
