The agreement, signed on Monday by Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, enables the exchange of ammunition, fuel, and maintenance services during joint military exercises, UN peacekeeping operations, and overseas evacuation missions between Japan's Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) and the Italian military.
Japan's foreign ministry said the pact would "enhance cooperation between the Self-Defense Forces and the Italian military while contributing to international peace and security," noting that Japan maintains similar agreements with the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, France, India, and Germany.
