SEOUL, December 04 (AJP) - The United States has expressed "grave concern" over President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law in South Korea.

"We are watching the recent developments in the ROK (Republic of Korea) with grave concern," Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said on Tuesday. He stressed that the U.S. expects political disputes in Korea to be resolved peacefully and in accordance with the rule of law.

Campbell noted that President Biden and other senior U.S. officials are being regularly briefed on the situation and reaffirmed the U.S. alliance with Korea, stressing its unshakeable support during this period of uncertainty.

Korea's parliament passed a resolution early Wednesday calling for the immediate lifting of martial law. The resolution, supported by all 190 lawmakers present, led to the withdrawal of military forces from the National Assembly building.

The vote, held at 1:00 a.m., directly challenged President Yoon's martial law declaration made around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. He had justified the move as necessary to "eradicate pro-North forces and protect the constitutional order."
