SEOUL, December 13 (AJP) - Samsung Electronics, Google and Qualcomm are set to debut a collaborative extended reality (XR) headset next year, signaling their entry into a market currently dominated by Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest.

The device, codenamed “Project Moohan,” will integrate Samsung’s hardware, Google’s Android XR operating system and Qualcomm’s chip technology.

The envisioned headset will offer users access to popular Google applications in virtual environments, interaction with the Gemini AI model, and immersive content experiences.

“Android XR is designed as an open and integrated platform for headsets and glasses,” said Shahram Izadi, Google’s vice president of XR, adding that the platform aims to “support developers in easily creating apps and games for new Android XR devices.”

Samsung’s hardware design will feature curved front panels, high-resolution displays, built-in speakers, and an external battery pack connected via cable. Choi Won-joon, Samsung’s executive vice president, suggested the device would be priced more competitively than Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro. “We are doing a lot of research about price points that could be a burden to our customers,” Choi said.

In addition to the XR headset, Google revealed plans to test prototype smart glasses equipped with Android XR capabilities among small user groups. These glasses will include features such as navigation, translation, and message summarization, powered by the Gemini AI model, and will operate independently of a smartphone.

Samsung is also expected to tease an augmented reality (AR) glasses prototype through videos or images during its Galaxy S25 Unpacked event early next year. The announcement will position Samsung alongside Meta’s “Orion” and Google’s smart glasses in the rapidly growing AR wearables market.

Samsung officials said the collaboration underscores a strategic push to challenge competitors and capture a share of the burgeoning XR and AR technology sectors, offering consumers and developers alike new possibilities for virtual and augmented experiences.
