SEOUL, December 13 (AJP) - Hyodol, a South Korean robot maker, has been registered as a medical device by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The robot, also named Hyodol, assists elderly individuals by tracking their activities, sending reminders for medication and walks, and alerting guardians or a central control system if prolonged inactivity is detected. Designed as a soft doll, it is equipped with communication devices, motion detection, and touch sensors. The robot utilizes ChatGPT technology to engage users in conversations that support emotional well-being and cognitive health.

The robot maker said on Friday that FDA registration signals a promising opportunity for expansion into overseas markets. The company added that the registration demonstrates the product's safety and effectiveness, as it has undergone a rigorous review process.

"We are thrilled that the performance and safety of the Hyodol care robot have been validated through FDA registration," said Hyodol CEO Kim Ji-hee. "We aim to enhance our localized services and begin full-scale exports to North America starting in 2025."

Meanwhile, Hyodol is scheduled to showcase its technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, taking place in Las Vegas from Jan. 7 to 10.
