The cooling technology, called pulsating heat pipes (PHP), consists of aluminum alloy and refrigerant positioned between battery cells. It exhausts heat outside the batter cells ten times more efficiently than conventional aluminum materials.
The new cooling system helps maintain stable battery temperatures during rapid charging, potentially reducing charging times for electric vehicles (EVs). The technology marks the first application of PHP in automotive battery cooling systems ready for mass production.
At 0.8mm thickness, the cooling material is significantly thinner than traditional heat pipes which measure about 6mm, making it more suitable for integration into existing battery systems.
"High-end electric vehicles that require ultra-fast charging are likely to be the first to adopt this technology," a Hyundai Mobis official told AJP. "We are currently capable of mass production," she added.
