LAS VEGAS, January 7 (AJP) - Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has called on Samsung Electronics to redesign its HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) chips during a press conference in Las Vegas, coinciding with CES 2025.

While SK hynix supplies HBM to Nvidia, Samsung is undergoing tests to secure its supplier position.

"[Samsung] has to engineer a new design, but they can do it, and they are working very fast," Huang said on Tuesday. "Samsung actually created the first HBM that Nvidia ever used. I believe they will recover."

This marks the second time Huang has addressed Samsung’s testing process. He first mentioned it during Nvidia's annual developer conference in March last year. Industry insiders had anticipated that Samsung would begin HBM shipments to Nvidia by late 2024, but testing has now been extended for over ten months.

Huang also discussed the adoption of Micron’s GDDR7 memory for the company’s newly unveiled GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs, presented during his keynote speech. This series does not include memory from Samsung or SK hynix.

When asked why Samsung and SK hynix were not included in the new series, Huang explained that, to his knowledge, neither company currently produces graphics memory. He added that he was unsure of the exact reason but believed it was likely insignificant.

Huang concluded by recognizing Samsung and SK hynix as key suppliers for Nvidia, noting that they are among the company’s largest memory suppliers and are exceptional memory companies.

On Wednesday, Huang is set to meet SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won.
