SEOUL, January 10 (AJP) - The ruling People Power Party (PPP) has recovered support after hitting rock bottom, following President Yoon Suk Yeol's botched martial law debacle last month.

According to a survey of over 1,000 adults conducted by pollster Gallup Korea early this week and released on Friday, some 34 percent expressed support for the PPP, while around 36 percent backed the main opposition Democratic Party (DP).

The PPP has narrowed the gap with the DP by about 10 percentage points in just three weeks, reaching levels seen before Yoon's short-lived overnight fiasco on Dec. 3, which led to his impeachment at the National Assembly less than two weeks later.

"Amid fierce political wrangling and disputes over ensuing issues following the parliament's decision to impeach Yoon, a sense of crisis seemed to unite conservative PPP supporters, while others became undecided as neither party appealed to them," the pollster said.

When asked if Yoon should be impeached, about 64 percent were in favor, down by 11 percentage points from 75 percent three weeks ago, suggesting that conservatives or swing voters may have changed their stance.

Meanwhile, the DP's leader Lee Jae-myung retained an overwhelming lead as the most favored candidate for the next presidency with 32 percent, followed by Kim Moon-soo, Minister of Employment and Labor (8 percent), former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon (6 percent), Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo (5 percent), and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon (3 percent).
