SEOUL, January 24 (AJP) - North Korea's rubber-stamp Supreme People's Assembly held a two-day parliamentary session this week without its leader Kim Jong-un in attendance, the country's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Friday.

The gathering was apparently aimed at finalizing its budget allocations for this year, including discussions on bolstering defense capabilities and economic development as part of the regime's five-year plan.

"The state budget..... was set up to successfully fulfill the five-year plan by concentrating the investment on accelerating the significant changes in the national defense capabilities," KCNA said.

Some experts had expected Kim would attend the session, as it coincided with the inauguration of the new U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this week, who hinted at possible reengagement with the renegade country. But Pyongyang has remained silent.
