SEOUL, April 11 (AJP) - Disgraced former President Yoon Suk Yeol left his official residence in Hannam-dong in Seoul's tony district of Yongsan on Friday, about a week after the Constitutional Court of Korea's ruling to impeach him over his botched martial law debacle late last year.

"As I leave the official residence, I am deeply grateful for everything," Yoon said in a written message upon his departure. "I will now return to life as an ordinary citizen and seek a new path to serve our country and its people," he added.

Yoon and his wife Kim Kun Hee returned to their previous home in southern Seoul at around 5 p.m.

A team of around 40 personnel has been formed to handle security at the high-end apartment complex in Seocho-dong, south of the Han River, where Yoon commuted for about six months following his inauguration in May 2022, during the relocation of the presidential office to Yongsan from Cheong Wa Dae.

Despite his ouster from office, Yoon, who was immediately stripped of all presidential privileges, is still entitled to some personal security protection for five years, with the possibility of an additional five-year extension upon request if deemed necessary.

But Yoon and Kim are reportedly considering moving elsewhere later, as the childless couple who keep about a dozen dogs and cats along with the presence of security officials may cause inconvenience to neighbors.

Meanwhile, the impeached president, who is still facing a criminal trial on charges of insurrection and abuse of power related to his Dec. 3 declaration of martial law, is scheduled to appear in a court in Seoul early next week.
