Yoon Sang-hyun Appointed Chair of Special Committee on Election Irregularities

Yoon Sang-hyun, a five-term lawmaker from the People Power Party, has been appointed as the chair of the Special Committee on Election Irregularities, which will investigate the shortage of ballots during the 9th nationwide local elections and other violations of citizens' voting rights. Yoon will be officially elected as chair following a vote in the National Assembly.

On June 17, Kim Seung-soo, the People Power Party's floor leader, announced this decision to reporters at the National Assembly. He also stated that Seo Beom-soo, who previously served as the secretary of the Administrative Safety Committee, will take on the role of committee secretary. The committee will include lawmakers Kim Eun-hye, Shin Dong-wook, Park Soo-min, Joo Jin-woo, and Choi Bo-yoon.

The party selected committee members based on their experience and expertise related to the election management system. Kim noted that Seo is well-informed about relevant issues from his time as secretary of the Administrative Safety Committee, while Kim Eun-hye has dealt with election management and reform in the Political Reform Committee. Park will focus on organizational management and budget execution.

The committee members will utilize their respective skills to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ballot shortage and examine the election management system.

Meanwhile, both ruling and opposition parties plan to hold a plenary session on June 18 to address the committee's proposed plan. Detailed plans for the investigation will be determined through discussions between the committee secretaries from both parties. The special committee is expected to consist of nine members from the Democratic Party, seven from the People Power Party, one from the Justice Party, and one from the Reform Party.
