Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir are heading to Switzerland to participate in discussions regarding the implementation of a ceasefire memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the United States and Iran.
According to reports from Bloomberg and other sources on June 21, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry announced that Sharif and Munir departed for Bürgenstock, Switzerland, the previous day to attend the talks.
The meeting aims to discuss the next steps for implementing the ceasefire MOU signed by the US and Iran. The Foreign Ministry indicated that during the talks, Sharif is expected to meet separately with representatives from both the US and Iran.
Additionally, the Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to continue supporting the implementation of the MOU as a mediating country.
In a statement released the day before, the Foreign Ministry noted that practical discussions would take place as a follow-up to the signing of the MOU, involving not only US and Iranian delegations but also mediators from Pakistan and Qatar.
The US and Iran signed the ceasefire MOU on June 17 and agreed to enter into follow-up negotiations addressing nuclear issues and more, starting June 19 for a period of 60 days. However, the schedule was postponed due to ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon.
On the US side, Middle East Special Envoy Steve Hanke and Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump's son-in-law, arrived in Switzerland ahead of the talks. Vice President JD Vance also traveled to Switzerland the previous day.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Iranian delegation, led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, has also arrived in the country.
Since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran in late February, Pakistan has positioned itself as a mediator. Sharif and Munir were involved in facilitating the first round of ceasefire talks between the US and Iran held in Islamabad on April 11-12.
However, no agreement was reached during those discussions, and both the US and Iran were absent from the anticipated second round of talks scheduled for April 21.
