Coway is accelerating its commitment to carbon neutrality with the opening of a new solar power plant at its Yugu factory in Chungnam.

On June 23, the company announced that it has expanded its solar power capacity by installing a 532-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar power plant, designated 'Solar Power Plant 003,' utilizing underused space in the outdoor parking lot of the Yugu factory.

The newly constructed plant features a canopy structure above the parking area, enhancing land efficiency. This setup not only generates eco-friendly energy but also protects vehicles from sunlight and rain while mitigating the heat island effect in the parking lot.

Coway plans to operate this facility for self-consumption, expecting to produce approximately 680 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 320 tons. This reduction is equivalent to planting about 50,000 pine trees. As a result, the total annual solar power generation across all company sites is projected to increase from 2,310 MWh last year to 2,990 MWh by 2027, marking an approximate 29% rise.

In its ongoing efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, Coway has been steadily expanding its eco-friendly energy infrastructure across its nationwide facilities. Currently, it operates self-consumption solar installations on the rooftops of major sites, and commercial solar power facilities are also in operation through the Yugu logistics center and its subsidiary, Birex Tech.

The new facility at the Yugu factory is part of a comprehensive environmental management roadmap established by the company's ESG committee last year. Coway aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions from approximately 18,000 tons in 2023 by 50% by 2033, with a goal of achieving 100% reduction to realize its 'net zero' policy by 2050.

A Coway representative stated, "This expansion is an effort to convert underutilized space within our facilities into eco-friendly energy sources, proactively responding to climate change. We will continue to strengthen our renewable energy initiatives and greenhouse gas reduction activities to achieve our 2050 net zero goal."
