The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) has completed the development of its "AI-Based Automated Soil Design Software" to support BIM design in site development projects.

BIM, or Building Information Modeling, is a technology that visualizes and automates information across all stages of construction—from planning and design to construction and maintenance—reducing errors and waste in advance.

The newly developed software features reinforcement learning-based AI specifically applied to soil design, a key component of site development projects. It optimizes and automates site planning and soil transportation design, enhancing design efficiency.

LH anticipates that the implementation of this technology will result in an average reduction of about 7% in soil transportation volume compared to traditional methods. The software will be distributed free of charge to design firms participating in BIM design services commissioned by LH.

On June 18, LH demonstrated the software's capabilities at a briefing held at its Southern Gyeonggi Regional Headquarters, where it gathered feedback on expanding BIM adoption. The event was attended by over 50 representatives from public institutions and private design firms.

Last July, LH also developed two types of automated software to support BIM design in site development, which were distributed free of charge to the private sector. This technology automatically calculates construction quantities and costs using construction information from 3D models and generates 3D models in conjunction with drainage calculations.

As the digital transformation of construction sites accelerates, there is growing interest in whether AI and BIM technologies developed by public procurement agencies can lead to improved efficiency for private design firms.

Lee Sang-jo, head of LH's Smart Construction Safety Headquarters, stated, "With the additional distribution of this AI-based automated soil design software following last year's BIM design support software, we hope to further activate BIM. We will continue to actively adopt smart technologies like AI and BIM to lead the digital innovation of the construction industry."
