The performance testing of the drone defense system will be established as a national standard. This standardization is expected to accelerate the government's certification process for the drone defense system.

On June 28, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's National Institute of Technology and Standards announced that it will officially designate the performance evaluation methods for the drone defense system, which protects critical national facilities from unidentified drone threats, as a national standard (KS). Starting June 29, the national standard 'KS W 8000' (performance testing methods for drone defense system components) will be available for review at the national standard certification office.

KS W 8000 includes specifications for components of the drone defense system, such as RF scanners, EO/IR cameras, radars, and jammers. This standardization reflects concerns that, despite the increasing threats posed by drones, there has been no standardized testing method for the drone defense system.

With the establishment of this standard, relevant agencies, including the National Intelligence Service, are expected to expedite the development of a certification system for the drone defense system. It is anticipated that this will help address security gaps at critical national facilities and foster the domestic drone defense industry ecosystem.

The standard was developed through a project initiated in 2021 by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration and the Defense Technology Quality Agency, in collaboration with the Korea Industrial Technology Testing Institute and experts from academia and industry. The National Institute of Technology and Standards noted that the standard underwent verification through two industry public hearings and four demonstration tests organized by the National Intelligence Service and the Counter-Terrorism Center.

Kim Dae-ja, head of the National Institute of Technology and Standards, stated, "We expect that the national standard will provide fair rules that contribute to technological advancement and ecosystem development. We will continue to actively support standardization efforts in collaboration with relevant agencies."
