Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, has asserted that leaders from the United States and Israel should be held accountable for their actions during the ongoing conflict. This statement comes as negotiations continue between the U.S. and Iran regarding the implementation of a ceasefire memorandum of understanding (MOU).
On June 28, local time, Khamenei made his remarks in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), declaring, "The attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iran are legal matters that should be addressed in domestic and international courts."
He claimed that the war has inflicted physical and psychological harm on the Iranian people, citing instances of child fatalities and attacks on medical facilities in Minab and Ramehrd as examples of war crimes. Khamenei emphasized, "These criminals must be arrested and held accountable for their actions."
Khamenei also referenced the death of his father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, due to U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on the first day of the war, February 28. He insisted that such cases of war damage should be addressed in future legal proceedings.
He directed relevant authorities to continue investigations and legal actions regarding crimes committed during the war, stating that these processes would help prevent the recurrence of similar offenses.
Khamenei's comments come amid disagreements between the U.S. and Iran over nuclear issues, sanctions relief, and conditions for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz following the signing of the MOU.
Iran is set to hold mourning ceremonies for the late Ali Khamenei from July 4 to 9 in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad.
