KT has upgraded its 5G business network for public institutions to a hub-based integration model, marking the first application in seven local governments under the Gyeonggi Provincial Office.

On June 29, KT (CEO Park Yoon-young) announced the launch of its '5G business network hub model,' which moves away from the previous redundant infrastructure setup for individual agencies. Instead, it establishes a centralized infrastructure that can be jointly utilized by subordinate organizations.

The 5G business network replaces traditional wired communication infrastructure with a more secure 5G wireless network designed for enterprises and public institutions. It allows for the application of existing internal security policies without the need for software installation, ensuring both convenience and security.

The core of the hub model is infrastructure efficiency. Previously, each agency requiring network security approval had to build its own infrastructure. The hub model integrates this infrastructure at a regional level, allowing subordinate organizations to share resources, which eliminates the need for large-scale equipment expansion when adding new networks. Developed by KT's Future Network Lab, this model enables independent operation for each agency by separating and controlling traffic from devices to the central network.

KT has installed the core equipment of the 5G business network, the Government Mobile Gateway (GMG), at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office data center and has launched a connected business network for seven local governments, including Suwon, Paju, and Uijeongbu.

Since participating in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's intelligent leading project in 2020, KT has been the sole participant in the 5G government network pilot project launched in 2022, leading its commercialization. Starting in 2024, the company has been providing services to various clients, including public institutions.

Looking ahead, KT plans to develop additional back-office functions that separate authority between higher and subordinate organizations and expand the service model across the public sector. The company has demonstrated its capabilities as a service provider for the 5th National Information and Communication Service (GNS) '5G government network service' with this Gyeonggi Province case.

Jeon Myung-jun, Senior Vice President of KT's Enterprise Service Division, stated, "This hub model is a new business model that can be utilized by all public clients, including regional governments and those sharing internal infrastructure. We will actively support the digital transformation of public clients through various platform services."
