Korea Zinc reported that Chairman Choi Yoon-bum met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on June 24 and discussed cooperation with Queensland Premier David Crisafulli on June 26.

Since establishing its local subsidiary, Sun Metal Corporation (SMC), in Townsville, Queensland, in 1996, Korea Zinc has operated the largest zinc smelter in Australia for nearly 30 years. Recently, the company has expanded its business into renewable energy sectors such as solar, wind, and hydrogen, while strengthening its collaboration with the Queensland government.

Premier Crisafulli stated, "Korea Zinc's SMC is one of Queensland's most important assets and a model company. The company and its management have been reliable partners, contributing to the local economy and coexisting with the community since SMC's establishment." He added that expanding cooperation with Korea Zinc is a significant priority for the state government.

Crisafulli also mentioned that Queensland is currently discussing key mineral cooperation with the U.S. government and expressed interest in exploring various collaboration opportunities with Korea Zinc, which is advancing the 'Project Crucible' for integrated mineral refining in the U.S.

In response, Chairman Choi expressed gratitude for the ongoing support and cooperation from the Queensland government and community, stating, "Korea Zinc and SMC will do our utmost to contribute to the industrial development of Queensland and Australia, establish a stable key mineral supply chain, and facilitate energy transition."

Both parties discussed the potential for expanding SMC's key mineral production, collaborating with mining and refining companies in Queensland, and strengthening Australia's key mineral supply chain.

Choi and Crisafulli have a long-standing relationship. Crisafulli was the local member of parliament when Choi served as the representative of SMC, and they worked together on the industrial development of Townsville and the future of the community. Now, they lead Queensland and Korea Zinc, respectively, in enhancing industrial cooperation and strengthening the key mineral supply chain between Korea and Australia.

Meanwhile, Australia is promoting the 'Australian Future Plan' to transition its mineral extraction and export-centered industry into a system that encompasses key mineral processing and manufacturing. Locally, Korea Zinc and SMC are viewed as key partners in realizing this policy due to their world-class non-ferrous metal refining technology and extensive business experience.

Earlier, Chairman Choi met with Prime Minister Albanese on June 24 to discuss expanding cooperation for enhancing the key mineral value chain and stabilizing the supply chain.
