Kang Hoon-sik, Chief of Staff to the President, stated on June 29 that the goal is to complete the Southwest Semiconductor Cluster within the current administration.

During a briefing following the conclusion of the 'Three Major Megaprojects National Report Meeting,' Kang noted, "Japan's TSMC Kumamoto semiconductor production facility began construction in just two years."

He added, "We aim to finish the groundwork within two years, allowing companies to start building their factories, similar to Japan," and mentioned that the President will convene meetings to oversee this initiative.

Earlier in the meeting, Chey Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, remarked, "It took nine years to establish the Yongin cluster. We must start preparing for new production bases now."

In response to a question about the potential for additional nuclear power plants in the Southwest region, Kang indicated, "The 12th Basic Plan for Power Supply will likely include nuclear power. It will encompass various renewable energy sources, including LNG and hydrogen."

He further explained, "As you know, constructing a nuclear power plant typically takes about nine to ten years. We will also consider ways to expedite the timeline."
