President Lee Jae-myung paid tribute to the dedication of miners who contributed to South Korea's industrialization on the occasion of the first "Miners' Day."

In a Facebook post on June 29, President Lee stated, "Thanks to the miners who carried pickaxes into deep, dark coal mines, we are able to enjoy the fruits of industrialization. I extend my deep respect and gratitude to all miners who ventured into the deepest darkness to illuminate the Republic of Korea."

He also noted that despite their life-risking labor, miners faced poor working conditions and unchanging living standards, referencing the 'Sabuk Incident' in 1980 in Jeongseon County, Gangwon Province.

During that time, coal miners went on strike to protest low wages and harsh working conditions, which escalated into large-scale clashes with police. The martial law command arrested over 200 individuals, during which human rights violations, including illegal detention and torture, occurred.

President Lee remarked, "History becomes complete when it remembers both light and darkness," expressing condolences and solidarity with those who have lived with the pain of Sabuk.

He also mentioned the film '1980 Sabuk,' released last year, highlighting the reconciliatory gestures between miners and police, as well as between miners and judges. He expressed gratitude for the resilience of citizens moving toward healing and unity.
