Outgoing Prime Minister Kim Min-seok Reflects on Year in Office

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok stated on June 30 that he had not been able to hold a single gathering with Cabinet members over the past year.

As he prepares to step down and return to the Democratic Party, Kim made these remarks during a Cabinet meeting and emergency economic assessment session at the Blue House. He noted, "We have been so busy that we often missed lunch while holding Cabinet meetings."

Kim expressed his gratitude, saying, "It has been a true honor to work alongside the President and fellow Cabinet members during the first year of a government created by the people."

He highlighted several achievements, including hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, attracting a global AI hub, facilitating the return of medical students, resolving internal conflicts within the administration, reducing suicide rates, integrating Gwangju and Jeonnam, and securing significant local investments from large corporations.

Looking ahead, he remarked, "In 20 years, we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of liberation. I am confident that for the first time in our 5,000-year history, South Korea is entering an era of global leadership." He added, "I know the President shares this dream and conviction."

Kim urged the public to support the Lee Jae-myung administration, stating, "I hope this government will be recorded as the beginning of South Korea's golden age. I will also work harder in the party and the National Assembly to ensure the success of our policies."

He acknowledged that many issues remain, particularly concerning the lives of young people, and pledged to continue addressing these challenges after returning to the party and the National Assembly.

In response, President Lee remarked to Kim, "I had hoped to prepare at least one meal for you since you haven't had a gathering in a year. Due to the number of attendees, we limited lunch to just Cabinet members today, so please enjoy it on your way out."

Earlier, President Lee encouraged Kim as he transferred the authority to preside over the Cabinet meeting, saying, "It seems likely that the Prime Minister will be replaced soon unless there are special circumstances. Thank you for all your hard work during this time."

Lee emphasized, "You have greatly contributed to the administration, and your leadership has been invaluable in achieving our government's accomplishments, which also reflect the efforts of the Cabinet members."
