SEOUL, June 30 (AJP) - Seoulites sought temporary relief from the scorching heat under shaded areas and other resting spots including the Cheonggyecheon Stream in central Seoul on Tuesday, as a heat advisory remained in effect across the capital.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), daytime temperatures in Seoul climbed to around 33 degrees Celsius.
The KMA said heat advisories remain in place for Seoul, parts of the surrounding metropolitan area, and the central Chungcheong region, as daytime highs above 30 degrees Celsius are expected to persist this week.
Scattered showers are also expected in inland areas including Seoul later in the day, with some regions seeing heavy downpours of up to 20 millimeters per hour, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, this year's monsoon season is set to begin on the southern resort island of Jeju with heavy rainfall expected through Thursday, arriving more than a week later than the seasonal average, before moving north toward Seoul.
