The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is ramping up preparations for the upcoming UN Ocean Conference, the highest-level international meeting in the marine sector. The ministry plans to accelerate efforts to secure a host city and prioritize marine cooperation agendas.
Starting July 8 and running through July 31, the ministry will solicit applications from metropolitan governments to host the 4th UN Ocean Conference, scheduled to take place in South Korea in 2028.
According to the ministry, the UN Ocean Conference is expected to attract over 15,000 participants from 193 UN member countries and international organizations.
The conference will be co-hosted by South Korea and Chile and will consist of five days of main events, special sessions, and side events. Key issues such as climate change and marine pollution will be addressed, with a final declaration to be adopted based on intergovernmental agreements established by UN General Assembly resolutions.
To ensure fairness in the selection of the host city, the ministry has established a selection committee for the 4th UN Ocean Conference, which includes public and private experts. The committee will consider factors such as meeting and accommodation facilities, access to international airports and public transportation, the willingness of local governments to host, and the symbolic significance of the city as a marine hub.
Through collaboration with the selected host city, the ministry aims to create a platform for extensive discussions on marine agendas involving leaders from major member countries, international organizations, and youth. The ministry also intends to leverage this opportunity to position South Korea as a leader in marine cooperation, focusing on issues like Arctic shipping routes and artificial intelligence (AI).
Hwang Jong-woo, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, stated, "The 4th UN Ocean Conference will be a historic opportunity to showcase South Korea's status as a global maritime power and to lead international cooperation for a sustainable marine future. We will thoroughly prepare to ensure a successful conference that highlights our country's excellent marine capabilities and rich maritime cultural heritage."
