Samsung plans to invest approximately 60 trillion won in the Yeongnam region to strengthen its future manufacturing capabilities. The investment will focus on expanding operations in existing facilities and industrial bases in Gumi, Ulsan, Busan, and Geoje, particularly in the fields of robotics, batteries, electronic components, and shipbuilding.

On July 3, Samsung announced this investment plan during the "Yeongnam Advanced Industry Development Vision National Report Meeting" held at Gyeongsang National University in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province. Major affiliates including Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Samsung Heavy Industries participated in the event.

The investment strategy emphasizes upgrading existing manufacturing hubs rather than creating new ones. Samsung aims to leverage advanced technologies such as AI and robotics to transform traditional industries into high-tech manufacturing sectors, with a goal of creating 200,000 quality jobs.

In Gumi, Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS will work on establishing a humanoid production system and a robot data factory. Plans also include the construction of an AI data center necessary for manufacturing and robotic automation.

In Ulsan, Samsung SDI will advance the mass production of solid-state batteries. The company also plans to expand the production of next-generation batteries for humanoid robots, as well as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and sodium batteries for energy storage systems.

Busan will be developed as a production base for AI server package substrates and multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC). Samsung Electro-Mechanics aims to position Busan as a core hub for high-performance package substrates and high-value-added MLCC motherlines.

In Geoje, Samsung Heavy Industries will enhance its capabilities in constructing high-value ships and marine infrastructure. The company plans to invest in AI factory equipment, robotics, and autonomous navigation technologies to establish a self-driving shipyard based on digital, AI, and robotic transformations.

Industry analysts view this investment plan as a declaration to maintain competitiveness by integrating next-generation technologies into Samsung's existing manufacturing bases, rather than creating a new large-scale industrial cluster in the Yeongnam region.
