Samsung Electronics has partnered with the Ministry of Employment and Labor to enhance its heat stress management system aimed at preventing heat-related illnesses among outdoor workers during the summer.

According to Samsung Electronics, the system integrates the artificial intelligence (AI) business-to-business (B2B) solution SmartThings Pro with the LTE model of the Galaxy Watch, creating a cloud-based safety management service. It features personalized management capabilities by analyzing temperature, humidity, and biometric data such as heart rate and activity levels of workers on-site.

Notably, the system incorporates the Ministry of Employment's guidelines for responding to heatwaves. When the perceived temperature reaches thresholds for heat advisories (above 33 degrees Celsius), heat warnings (above 35 degrees), or critical heat warnings (above 38 degrees), alerts are automatically generated on the manager's dashboard.

Managers can then send immediate notifications regarding heat illness precautions and rest recommendations to workers' Galaxy Watches. This system is currently operational at Samsung's new semiconductor production line construction site in Pyeongtaek.

To enhance the solution's reliability, Samsung has completed academic collaborations and clinical validations. Working with a research team from Incheon University, they strengthened algorithms that predict core body temperature in real-time by integrating personal data such as height, weight, gender, age, work environment, and heart rate patterns.

Additionally, clinical validations were conducted in collaboration with the Data Science Research Institute at Samsung Medical Center to study the correlation between physical responses in actual heat stress situations and the algorithm's predictions.

The foundation of this system, SmartThings Pro, received ISO 27001 certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) last month, recognizing its information security management system.

Park Chan-woo, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' B2B Integrated Offering Center, stated, "We developed this technology to proactively manage heat stress by reflecting the Ministry of Employment's guidelines and the needs for heat stress management in industrial settings. We will continue to advance our safety management solutions based on an information security management system that meets international standards."
