A new era has begun where inmates can use generative artificial intelligence (AI) to write resumes and prepare for employment while in prison.
The Ministry of Justice, led by Minister Jeong Seong-ho, announced on July 6 that it has launched an "AI-based independence education" program for exemplary inmates at Yeoju Prison and Cheongju Women’s Prison to assist their stable reintegration into society after release.
The program will run as a pilot during the summer break, involving 19 selected students from Korea National Open University (10 from Yeoju Prison and 9 from Cheongju Women’s Prison) who have demonstrated strong academic and independence aspirations. This initiative aims to equip inmates with practical skills necessary for daily life and employment in a rapidly changing digital society.
Unlike traditional theoretical training, this program is designed to be practical, allowing participants to apply what they learn directly in job-seeking processes.
The curriculum is developed in collaboration with KT ESG, which provides extensive support in terms of educational materials and software. Participants will learn a range of skills, starting from the basics of using generative AI to document creation, resume and cover letter writing, compiling employment competency materials, and producing promotional materials. This is expected to help bridge the digital divide and enhance their job competitiveness.
Additionally, the Ministry of Justice has prioritized digital ethics and crime prevention education to prevent the misuse of AI. The program will address potential issues such as deepfake technology abuse, privacy violations, misinformation, and copyright infringement, ensuring that participants understand legal responsibilities and ethical considerations. The Ministry is also taking measures to address public concerns regarding information security.
During the training period, only pre-approved and verified educational AI sites will be accessible, implementing a strict "whitelist" security policy, while internet access for non-educational purposes will be completely blocked.
Minister Jeong Seong-ho stated, "AI technology will become one of the most essential competencies in our society in the future. We will provide practical opportunities for inmates to successfully reintegrate while ensuring thorough information security management and ethics education to reassure the public."
The Ministry plans to continuously expand the educational framework to enhance inmates' employment capabilities, thereby supporting their reintegration into society and strengthening the foundation for preventing recidivism.
