Gaon Cable announced on July 8 that it is intensifying its efforts to penetrate the transmission market by enhancing its high-voltage cable product lineup and investing in facilities.

The company plans to expand its offerings from the existing 154kV 1000 square millimeter (sqmm) high-voltage cables to include the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) standard 2500 sqmm superconductors, which will be supplied starting next year.

This investment is a proactive measure to address the surging demand for high-voltage transmission networks driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and semiconductor production facilities, as well as offshore wind energy.

Notably, KEPCO has recently reformed its purchasing system by separating the procurement of high-voltage cables and accessories, opening the door for Gaon Cable to participate in related bids. The company is expected to leverage its experience supplying 66kV and 154kV cables for projects such as the Jeonnam Offshore Wind Phase 1 connection network and large data center power networks in Gyeonggi Province to compete in these tenders.

Currently, the government's initiative to establish AI data centers and semiconductor clusters is projected to generate an additional power demand of approximately 28GW, which is expected to drive a corresponding increase in demand for high-voltage cables.

Jung Hyun, CEO of Gaon Cable, stated, "We will strengthen our competitiveness in the high-voltage transmission market based on the technology we have accumulated in the distribution cable sector," adding, "We will also seek opportunities to enter the North American high-voltage cable market through our U.S. subsidiary, LSCUS."
