As military tensions between the United States and Iran continue over control of the Hormuz Strait, Iran and Oman have engaged in discussions to ensure safe passage through the waterway.

On July 11, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, announced via Telegram that he met with Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, Oman’s Foreign Minister, in Muscat.

During the meeting, Araghchi explained that they discussed measures to secure the safety of vessels passing through the Hormuz Strait based on Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

He also noted that Albusaidi reaffirmed the need for diplomatic solutions to prevent escalating regional tensions. Araghchi expressed hope that the existing MOU between Iran and the U.S. would be faithfully implemented to stabilize regional security.

Meanwhile, Oman has reportedly prepared a mediation proposal to manage shipping traffic in the Hormuz Strait by dividing it into two north-south routes.

CNN, citing informed sources, reported that while the proposal has not yet been finalized, it includes provisions for keeping both routes open. The 'southern route' through Omani waters would guarantee free navigation, while the 'northern route' through Iranian waters would require vessels to obtain prior approval from Iranian authorities.

However, the proposal reportedly does not include any provisions for additional fees related to vessel passage.
