As tensions escalate between the United States and Iran, the Iranian government has announced that it will not engage in negotiations with the U.S. for the time being. The ceasefire memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last month is effectively rendered moot amid mutual accusations of violations.

According to Reuters, Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, stated on July 15, "We currently have no plans to negotiate with the U.S. and are focusing on national defense."

Baghaei emphasized that the implementation of the MOU depends on the other party fulfilling its commitments. Iran has made it clear that it will not adhere to its obligations if the U.S. breaches the agreement first.

Iranian leadership has also expressed strong sentiments. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, remarked, "If there is nothing to gain from an agreement with the U.S., there is no reason to uphold it."

The U.S. and Iran signed the MOU last month, agreeing to engage in follow-up negotiations for a final agreement over a maximum period of 60 days. However, renewed conflicts over control of the Strait of Hormuz and sanctions against Iran have led to a resurgence of military confrontations, effectively halting negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that if Iran does not return to negotiations, attacks could extend to power plants and bridges. The U.S. has also resumed its maritime blockade against Iran.

With Iran prioritizing military responses over negotiations, it appears unlikely that discussions regarding a ceasefire will resume in the near future.
