SEOUL, August 08 (AJP) - South Korea has begun scaling back and suspending portions of its driver's license examinations as an intense heat wave continues to grip the country, prompting authorities to introduce emergency measures to protect test-takers and staff.
The Korea Road Traffic Authority said on Saturday that driving skills tests would be concentrated in the cooler morning hours as heat wave warnings remain in effect across much of the country.
In the afternoon, the number of tests will be reduced when the perceived temperature reaches 35 degrees Celsius (95°F). Tests will be suspended if the perceived temperature rises to 38 degrees Celsius (100.4°F), the agency said.
The temporary measures are intended to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses among applicants and examiners working outdoors.
Applicants affected by schedule changes will be notified individually, while driving test centers have been equipped with portable outdoor air conditioners, shade shelters and parasols.
South Korea has been experiencing prolonged periods of extreme heat this summer, prompting authorities to expand heat safety measures across public facilities and outdoor workplaces as temperatures and humidity remain elevated.
The Korea Meteorological Administration has issued heat wave warnings for many parts of the country in recent days, with high humidity pushing perceived temperatures well above actual air temperatures.
