SEOUL, August 31 (AJP) - Samsung Heavy Industries has secured an additional order for two container ships, the shipbuilder said on Monday.
According to the shipbuilder, it signed a contract with an Africa-based shipping company to build two container ships worth 444.5 billion won (US$324 million), with the vessels scheduled for delivery in stages by December 2028.
With the latest deal, the company’s merchant ship orders this year rose to 36 vessels worth $6.1 billion, surpassing its annual target of $5.7 billion.
By vessel type, Samsung Heavy Industries has won orders for 14 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, two ethane carriers, four gas carriers, four container ships and 12 crude oil tankers. Including offshore projects such as two floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) production facilities, Samsung Heavy Industries’ total orders this year stood at $10.5 billion.
The shipbuilder has focused on mid- to large-size container ships of 8,000 to 13,000 TEUs, as shipping companies look to replace older vessels with more fuel-efficient, eco-friendly ships amid stricter environmental rules and higher fuel costs.
"Now that we have reached our annual order target, we will prioritize securing profitable orders rather than simply increasing order volume," a Samsung Heavy Industries spokesman said.
