Samsung Electronics Leads $3 Billion Investment in European AI Startup MistralAI

Samsung Electronics has led a significant investment round for MistralAI, a French artificial intelligence (AI) startup often referred to as the 'OpenAI of Europe.'

On September 8, MistralAI announced that it raised €3 billion (approximately $3.2 billion) through a Series D funding round led by Samsung Electronics. This investment values MistralAI at over €21 billion (about $22.5 billion), marking the largest equity investment in a European private technology company since its founding in 2023.

Alongside Samsung, the investment round included participation from EQT's ScaleUp Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity. Other current investors, such as ASML and NVIDIA, also contributed to the follow-on investment. However, the specific amount invested by Samsung Electronics and the equity stake acquired have not been disclosed.

MistralAI plans to use the funds to enhance its AI model research and development and expand its computing infrastructure. The company aims to accelerate its entry into the 'sovereign AI' market, allowing businesses and governments to directly control their data, models, and computing environments in competition with U.S. and Chinese AI firms. MistralAI currently operates in 20 countries, promoting an open-weight model that companies can build upon and modify as needed.

The collaboration between Samsung Electronics and MistralAI is expected to extend beyond investment. Arthur Mensh, CEO of MistralAI, expressed intentions to work with Samsung on integrating AI into manufacturing processes, leveraging his experience with ASML. The potential partnership between Samsung, with its semiconductor and manufacturing capabilities, and MistralAI, known for its AI model technology, is noteworthy.

MistralAI is also targeting the South Korean market. The company has recently begun hiring personnel for its enterprise AI services in Seoul, preparing to expand collaborations with local governments and businesses. For Samsung, this investment not only secures a connection with a leading European AI model company but also lays the groundwork for future collaborations in manufacturing AI, enterprise AI, and sovereign AI.
