Hyundai Rotem is set to enhance safety in its aerospace operations by implementing smart factory technology based on artificial intelligence (AI) from Hyundai Motor Company.

On September 22, Hyundai Rotem announced that it has signed a comprehensive memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hyundai Motor to improve safety through automation in production sites.

Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate to introduce automation systems at Hyundai Rotem's aerospace facilities. In March, Hyundai Rotem signed an investment agreement with Muju County in North Jeolla Province, committing approximately 300 billion won to build a comprehensive production base for aerospace manufacturing and research and development (R&D) by 2034.

Hyundai Rotem plans to apply Hyundai Motor's AI-based smart factory and automated production technologies to high-risk processes, ensuring worker safety and enhancing quality competitiveness.

Traditionally known for its armored vehicles, Hyundai Rotem is gradually expanding its aerospace business. The company is currently engaged in aerospace technology development projects with the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and the Defense Technology Promotion Institute, focusing on ramjet engines, hypersonic engines, and methane engines for reusable launch vehicles. Last year, it secured a key technology project for the structure and propulsion system of long-range air-to-air missiles commissioned by ADD.

A representative from Hyundai Rotem stated, "We will create a work environment with zero safety accidents by utilizing advanced unmanned technologies and ensure the timely supply of high-quality engines and propulsion systems."

Additionally, Hyundai Rotem is pioneering the development of methane engine technology for reusable launch vehicles, aiming to develop core technologies for a 35-ton class methane engine by 2030 through a project led by the Defense Technology Promotion Institute.
