Lee Jeong-hyun Appointed as Deputy Prosecutor General

Lee Jeong-hyun, the Chief Prosecutor of Suwon, has been appointed as the Deputy Prosecutor General. This appointment fills the vacancy left by former Deputy Prosecutor General Koo Ja-hyun, who resigned in July, approximately two months ago.

The Ministry of Justice announced on September 22 that the personnel change for one prosecutor at the level of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office will take effect on September 23.

A Ministry official explained, "This is a measure to address the vacancy caused by the resignation of the Deputy Prosecutor General and to ensure a smooth launch of the prosecution office."

The new Deputy Prosecutor General, originally from Naju, graduated from Yongsanpo High School in Naju and studied law at Korea University. He was promoted to Chief Prosecutor (head of the Public Investigation Division at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office) in August 2020 during the Moon Jae-in administration. While serving as the first Deputy Chief Prosecutor at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office that same year, he led the investigation into the 'Channel A media collusion' allegations, which caused conflicts with then-Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol.

After the Yoon administration took office in 2022, he was reassigned to a research position at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, but returned as Chief Prosecutor of Suwon High Prosecutors' Office in November of last year following a change in government. In April of this year, he apologized in the National Assembly regarding the controversy over the 'salmon party' that arose during the investigation into the North Korean remittance case involving Ssangbangwool.

The new Deputy Prosecutor General is regarded as a leading figure in planning and investigation within the prosecution service, having held key positions across the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, and local prosecutors' offices. He is praised for his legal expertise and strong reputation among fellow prosecutors, as well as his exceptional organizational management skills. During his tenure as Chief Prosecutor of Suwon, he was recognized for his stable leadership in responding to major local cases and serious crimes.
