During the Chuseok holiday, many people returning to their hometowns will find themselves needing cash more than usual. Whether purchasing holiday food at traditional markets or giving allowances to parents, children, and nieces or nephews, cash is often necessary. However, since most bank branches will be closed during the holiday, it is advisable to check ATM locations in advance.

According to the financial sector on the 24th, nearby ATM locations can be found using the 'Financial Map - Financial Daedong Map' application. This service, provided by the Financial Services Commission and the Bank of Korea in collaboration with the Financial Settlement Institute and the financial sector since November 2021, allows users to view the locations of ATMs and bank branches, as well as transaction fees and accessibility features for people with disabilities.

The app also provides information on ATMs operated by convenience store operators, in addition to those directly managed by banks. To find ATMs near your current location, users can expand the search area on the app's map. Internet-only banks, which do not operate physical branches or ATMs, are excluded from the search results.

Users can also check ATM locations through individual bank mobile apps. Mapping platforms like Naver Maps and Kakao Maps, as well as navigation apps such as T Map and Mapy, also allow users to search for nearby ATMs. The ATM and branch information provided by the Financial Daedong Map is linked to these platforms.

Meanwhile, the number of ATMs available for cash withdrawal is rapidly declining. According to data submitted by the Financial Supervisory Service to the National Assembly's Political Affairs Committee, the total number of bank ATMs nationwide was recorded at 24,711 at the end of June this year. This marks a decrease of 4,610 (15.7%) from 29,321 at the end of 2022. Compared to the end of last year, there has been a reduction of 636 ATMs in just six months.

By bank, NH Nonghyup Bank saw the largest decline, with its ATMs dropping from 5,091 at the end of 2022 to 3,981 by the end of June, a decrease of 21.8%. Shinhan Bank's ATMs fell from 4,849 to 3,829, a 21.0% drop, while Woori Bank's ATMs decreased from 3,950 to 3,213, an 18.7% reduction. KB Kookmin Bank's ATMs went from 4,563 to 4,105, a 10.0% decrease, and Hana Bank's ATMs saw a slight decline from 3,527 to 3,483, a 1.3% drop.
