KT Cloud has begun construction on a 60 megawatt (MW) artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. The initiative aims to expand data center infrastructure beyond the capital region and meet the growing demand for large-scale AI infrastructure.
On September 28, KT Cloud announced its participation in the AI data center project in Gunsan, which is being led by comprehensive energy company SGC Energy.
The project will develop a large-scale AI data center on a 115,702 square meter site in Gunsan. Construction of the first phase, a modular data center with a capacity of 60 MW, is set to begin by the end of this year, with operations expected to commence in the first quarter of 2028.
KT Cloud will serve as the design, build, and operate (DBO) partner for the project. Hyundai Engineering will act as a co-contractor, handling construction, civil engineering, equipment, landscaping, and telecommunications work, as well as some power and cooling system installations.
The Gunsan AI data center will feature a liquid cooling-based 'AI Ready' design. According to KT Cloud, it will be the first data center in Korea to implement a liquid cooling design capable of supporting NVIDIA's next-generation AI accelerator, 'H100.'
KT Cloud plans to establish the Gunsan AI data center as a key hub for AI data center operations outside the capital region. The company aims to secure locations based on regional characteristics and customer demand, with a goal of gradually expanding its total AI data center supply to 1 gigawatt (GW) by 2031.
