Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Baek Kyung-hoon stated on October 6 that the Doppamo project, which focuses on developing a unique artificial intelligence (AI) foundation model, is progressing as planned. He emphasized that the initiative aims to address global challenges related to AI and cybersecurity through the Frontier AI project.

During a national audit session of the Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, Baek responded to a question from lawmaker Park Jeong-ha of the ruling People Power Party regarding the differences between the Doppamo and Frontier AI development projects. He explained, "Doppamo was initiated to secure a leading position in the global industrial and public sectors," but noted that the U.S. government's announcement of super intelligence (SI) plans, which exceed previous goals, has prompted the need for the Frontier AI project.

Baek emphasized that the Doppamo project will continue, stating, "Through the second evaluation, South Korea is enhancing its position as one of the top three countries in global AI. Major corporations and startups are participating, creating an AI ecosystem." He added that Doppamo is currently being widely adopted in the public sector and that by the time of the third evaluation results, it will be at a level that can be effectively utilized.

In response to Park's inquiry about discussions regarding the Frontier AI project, Baek confirmed that discussions have indeed taken place. He further explained, "We have been in discussions to secure a Frontier AI model, as it has become clear that achieving our set goals through Doppamo alone would be challenging."
