GS Construction has reported that its internal platform, Xi-Market, has facilitated the reuse of over 2,000 items, including leftover materials and office supplies, across various construction sites. The platform has been implemented at 75 sites nationwide since its introduction in December 2024.

According to GS Construction, Xi-Market operates by allowing the sharing and exchange of items between sites that are either starting construction or nearing completion. This initiative was developed in response to suggestions from field employees aimed at reducing waste caused by discarding usable items while purchasing new supplies.

Among the items traded, office supplies accounted for approximately 900 transactions, making up 46% of the total. Safety equipment represented 450 transactions (23%), while construction materials accounted for 120 transactions (6%).

Materials that cannot be reused at other sites are being utilized for upcycling projects. Since 2022, GS Construction has implemented ideas from its internal innovation program to recycle waste safety helmets into desks, chairs, and nameplates, and has expanded the use of vertical formwork nets.

The vertical formwork nets are being repurposed into bags for site use, while benches made from waste materials are donated to welfare facilities such as veterans' homes. The company estimates that its upcycling of waste safety helmets has reduced carbon emissions by approximately 3 tons to date.

A GS Construction representative stated, “There are many areas in construction sites where resource waste can be reduced with small ideas and actions. We will continue to discover ideas that originate from the field and expand our resource recycling activities.”
