Hyundai Engineering has secured a contract for the construction of a data center in Wonchang-dong, Incheon. This follows the recent award of the SGC AI data center project in Gunsan, marking a significant step in the company's growth trajectory in the data center sector.

On October 7, Hyundai Engineering announced that it has been awarded the 'Incheon Wonchang-dong Data Center Construction Project.'

This project is commissioned by Cheongna IDC PFV, established by Idotera. It involves the construction of a 50MW data center in Wonchang-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon, with a total project scale of approximately 870 billion won.

The data center will be built with four underground floors and eleven above-ground floors. Construction is set to begin in November of this year, with completion targeted for the second half of 2029.

The Wonchang-dong data center is expected to have excellent accessibility to existing data center regions in the metropolitan area, enhancing communication connectivity between data centers. It is also well-positioned for access to Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International Airport, indicating potential for future growth as a digital infrastructure.

Hyundai Engineering will handle architecture, civil engineering, facilities, landscaping, and telecommunications work. The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) work will be jointly undertaken by Hyundai Engineering and its partner, KT Cloud.

This consecutive contract win is significant as it reflects the successful implementation of a value-based management and business portfolio innovation strategy initiated by CEO Joo Woo-jung.

In July, Hyundai Engineering announced a new value system and has been working to innovate its business portfolio beyond its traditional EPC-focused structure, aiming to foster future energy and advanced industrial construction as new growth pillars.

The data center is a key project representing this strategy. It requires a combination of industrial construction technology and energy efficiency technology. Hyundai Engineering is enhancing its competitiveness by leveraging its experience in advanced industrial facility construction and energy business capabilities.

To strengthen its competitiveness in the data center sector, Hyundai Engineering is accelerating the enhancement of its technical capabilities through a dedicated organization. It is conducting technical seminars and training programs for practitioners and focusing on securing comprehensive capabilities across design, construction, and maintenance.

The company is also continuing to develop technology and establish strategic partnerships. This includes applying specialized OSC methods for data centers to shorten construction time and improve quality, ensuring stable power supply, implementing high-efficiency cooling systems, and enhancing fire and disaster response technologies and security infrastructure.

Hyundai Engineering is also pursuing the development of energy procurement models for data centers that integrate renewable energy sources like solar power with next-generation energy projects such as small modular reactors (SMR) and hydrogen. The goal is to secure a differentiated business model that connects data center construction with energy supply.

As demand for AI and cloud services drives rapid growth in the data center market, construction companies are expanding their competitiveness beyond simple construction capabilities to include power, cooling, and operational integration.

A Hyundai Engineering representative stated, “Based on our unique achievements and differentiated competitiveness accumulated in the high-tech construction sector both domestically and internationally, we are continuously winning data center contracts. Our strategy to cultivate data centers as a future growth engine is yielding significant results in the market. We will continue to expand our data center business, which is a key infrastructure in the AI era, leveraging our unique capabilities that connect space and energy.”
