GS Engineering & Construction is collaborating with the Seoul Energy Corporation to explore the application of low-carbon energy solutions, including district heating, solar, geothermal, and water-source energy, in urban redevelopment projects in Seoul. The Seongsu Strategic Redevelopment Zone 1, which GS Engineering & Construction secured this year, will be a primary focus for assessing technical and economic feasibility.

On October 7, GS Engineering & Construction announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Seoul Energy Corporation at its headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul, to expand the adoption of zero-energy buildings in private residential complexes. The two organizations plan to evaluate the potential for low-carbon energy applications in redevelopment sites across Seoul and identify energy solutions to meet zero-energy building (ZEB) standards.

GS Engineering & Construction will review the design and related infrastructure for each project site, while the Seoul Energy Corporation will analyze the heat sources and supply methods necessary for district heating and renewable energy from both technical and economic perspectives. The goal is to find supply methods tailored to the conditions of each site by examining energy performance and costs from the early stages of redevelopment projects.

The Seongsu 1st District, mentioned as the first major project under review, is a redevelopment initiative in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, aimed at constructing 3,014 housing units, with an estimated construction cost of 2.154 trillion won. GS Engineering & Construction was selected as the contractor in April.

In the Seongsu 1st District, GS Engineering & Construction will assess the technical and economic feasibility of an 'energy mix' that combines district heating and renewable energy. Currently, the project is in the stage of exploring potential applications, and specific energy sources and facility sizes have not yet been finalized. Based on the findings, the company aims to identify solutions that can be applied to other residential complexes and its Xi product line.

The government is gradually strengthening energy performance standards for private buildings. According to the roadmap for the zero-energy building system, design standards equivalent to ZEB Level 5 have been applied since last year to private buildings with a total floor area of over 1,000 square meters and apartment complexes with more than 30 units.

A representative from GS Engineering & Construction stated, “Climate change and energy efficiency will be crucial factors in determining future living environments and property values. We will discover environmentally friendly energy solutions that can be practically applied in our projects.”
