The South Korean government is embarking on the development of next-generation semiconductor core technologies to overcome the performance and power consumption limits of artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors. On October 14, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced the launch of the K-Moonshot semiconductor operation committee and technology committee.

The K-Moonshot initiative aims to address national challenges and drive technological innovation through the convergence of AI and science and technology. One of its twelve missions focuses on securing next-generation core technologies that surpass the performance and power consumption limits of all devices in the market. Key tasks include establishing a 'memory-centric computing' architecture to significantly enhance semiconductor performance and developing technologies to improve AI computing efficiency per watt (Token/W).

Additionally, the initiative will work on ultra-fine semiconductors and next-generation stacking technologies, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), while also conducting integrated demonstrations to validate these technologies in real system environments.

The newly launched K-Moonshot semiconductor operation committee is chaired by Kim Ji-young, a semiconductor project director. It includes over 20 experts from the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Research Foundation, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Juseong Engineering. A separate technology committee will support the establishment of a semiconductor technology roadmap, detailed project planning, progress monitoring, and goal management.

The government plans to closely link policy formulation with research and development planning and execution, as well as industrial application, through these two committees, continuously reflecting changes in the technological environment and industry demands.

Kim Seong-soo, head of the R&D Policy Office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “In the AI era, improving the performance of individual semiconductors is not enough; the ability to organically connect semiconductor devices, memory, and integration and packaging technologies will determine the national semiconductor competitiveness by innovating the overall system performance and power efficiency.”

He added, “By uniting the capabilities of industry, academia, and research, we will proactively secure core technologies for future semiconductors and systematically promote the K-Moonshot semiconductor mission to strongly support three major mega-projects, ensuring that research outcomes translate into competitiveness in the actual industrial field.”
