Haenam County has secured 17.4 billion won (approximately $14.5 million) for its 2027 sewage system improvement project, aiming to enhance living conditions in rural areas where public sewage facilities are lacking.
The county announced it will undertake a total of 15 projects next year, including five new initiatives and ten ongoing projects, with a total budget of 29.6 billion won (about $24.5 million).
This initiative focuses on expanding sewage treatment infrastructure in rural areas to alleviate residents' inconveniences and protect water quality in public waterways through proper treatment of domestic wastewater.
Specifically, the plan includes installing sewage treatment facilities and pipelines in rural villages that have not previously benefited from public sewage services.
The confirmed new projects for 2027 include sewage pipeline upgrades in Hwawon, Sanchon, and six other locations, as well as sewage system improvements in Haenam, Namcheon, and two other sites, along with the Songji and Hwangsan rural village sewage system upgrades. In total, five new projects are planned.
Once completed, three village sewage treatment facilities capable of processing a total of 300 cubic meters of domestic wastewater per day will be established, and approximately 50.2 kilometers of sewage pipelines will be upgraded.
This will enable the treatment of domestic wastewater from over 1,150 households, contributing to improved sanitation and prevention of water pollution in rural areas.
The county plans to initially invest 3.3 billion won (about $2.7 million), including 2 billion won in national funds, to begin basic and detailed design services for the new projects.
Following the design phase and consultations with relevant agencies, the county aims to implement the projects by 2030.
Ongoing sewage system improvement projects will also continue.
These include upgrades to aging sewage pipelines in Haenam-eup and four other locations, as well as ongoing projects in Samsan, Sin-gi, Hwasan, Daeji, Haechang, Hyunsan, Gusan, Songji, Eoran, Yeongpyeong, Okcheon, Mago, Masan, Anjeong, and Hwangsan, totaling ten ongoing projects.
A total of 26.3 billion won (approximately $22 million), including 15.4 billion won in national funds, will be allocated to these ongoing projects.
The county plans to improve the functionality of existing facilities while expanding public sewage services in areas lacking sewage treatment infrastructure.
By pursuing both new and ongoing projects simultaneously, the county aims to minimize any inconveniences to residents during the design and construction phases.
Lim Young-seok, head of the sewage facility team at Haenam County's Water and Sewage Department, stated, “We expect that this new project will significantly improve the living environment in rural areas that have not previously benefited from public sewage services. We will ensure that residents' opinions are fully considered from the design stage and that ongoing projects proceed without delays to minimize any inconveniences.”
Meanwhile, Haenam County has allocated 29.6 billion won for the 2027 sewage system improvement project, with 3.3 billion won for new projects and 26.3 billion won for ongoing projects. The new projects are planned to be implemented by 2030, which is expected to significantly expand the sewage treatment infrastructure in rural areas.
