HD Construction Machinery is accelerating the development of a 3MW diesel generator engine to meet the increasing power demands of data centers.
The company announced on October 15 that it recently held the launch ceremony for its 'DX77' generator engine at its Gunsan campus. The DX77, with a displacement of 77 liters and a maximum output of 3MW, is the largest model in the company's engine lineup. Its maximum output can support the average power consumption of approximately 7,000 households.
Following the launch ceremony, the DX77 has entered the performance and durability verification phase. Mass production is scheduled to begin in 2028.
The DX77 is characterized as a high-speed engine operating at 1,800 revolutions per minute, offering high output and fuel efficiency. Its high output relative to its size allows for reduced installation space, making it suitable for modular data centers that can expand their capacity incrementally based on power needs.
To maintain stable performance during prolonged high-speed operation, the engine incorporates high-strength, wear-resistant materials and an efficient cooling system. The filter replacement interval has been extended to 1,000 hours to reduce maintenance burdens. After the product launch, a long-term service warranty will also be provided.
HD Construction Machinery is also working to expand its lineup of generator engines in the 1-3MW range. Currently, the company produces the 1MW DX22 engine at its Incheon plant, and plans to sequentially mass-produce generator engines starting with the 1.5MW DX37 at the new Gunsan engine plant, which is set to be completed by the end of this month, in early 2027.
By 2029, the company aims to begin mass production of the 2MW DX50 engine, completing its 1-3MW generator engine lineup. The new Gunsan plant will have a maximum annual production capacity of 1,250 units.
Additionally, the company plans to expand its gas engine lineup targeting the North American market. This move is in response to the growing demand for on-site power generation due to the spread of AI data centers and delays in power grid connections. The DX77 is also designed to be adaptable for various fuels, including gas and hydrogen, in the future.
Moon Jae-young, President of HD Construction Machinery, stated, "The DX77 is a crucial product that will elevate the competitiveness of our generator engine business. We will enhance product completeness through thorough performance and durability verification and secure new growth momentum in the global power generation market."
Meanwhile, on October 7, HD Construction Machinery signed a long-block supply contract worth approximately 390 billion won with the U.S. power infrastructure solutions company ERock. The supply period is set from 2027 to 2028, with plans to provide 22-liter engine bodies for the power generation facilities of major U.S. tech companies' large-scale data centers.
