Fortimaru, an artificial intelligence (AI) startup, is joining the government-led K-AI Patent Strategy Council to secure intellectual property rights for domestic AI technology and respond to global patent competition.

On October 16, Fortimaru announced its participation in the K-AI Patent Strategy Council, which was established by the Intellectual Property Office and the Korea Intellectual Property Strategy Development Institute. The council aims to address global AI patent competition and support the domestic AI ecosystem.

The K-AI Patent Strategy Council was formed in response to the strengthening of independent AI development policies in major countries like the United States and China, with the goal of establishing a proactive national patent strategy.

About 20 organizations, including the Intellectual Property Office, the Korea Intellectual Property Strategy Development Institute, Fortimaru, LG AI Research, SK Telecom, KT, Kakao, Upstage, Rebellion, Nota AI, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), are participating in the council, which leads domestic AI technology development and ecosystem.

The launch ceremony was attended by Kim Han-soo, Chief Technology Officer of Fortimaru, along with technology and IP leaders from participating organizations. The event introduced the council's operational direction and a new initiative planned for 2027 called 'Support for Strengthening Sovereign AI Global Patents.'

Fortimaru has focused on securing patents both domestically and internationally based on its proprietary AI core technology. To date, it has filed a total of 122 patents, of which 50 pertain to generative AI.

Fortimaru holds key technologies such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG42), Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC42), and Domain-Specific Lightweight Language Models (LLM42). Based on these technologies, it is developing methods to reduce hallucination phenomena, which are often cited as limitations of large-scale AI, and is expanding its business into the field of agentic AI that autonomously designs and executes complex workflows.

Kim Dong-hwan, CEO of Fortimaru, stated, “As global competition for AI supremacy intensifies, the race for patents to secure core technologies and intellectual property rights is also heating up. Through our participation in the council, we will proactively respond to the risks of technological dependency and patent disputes with overseas big tech companies.” He added, “We will actively contribute to strengthening South Korea's patent sovereignty and global technological competitiveness in sovereign AI based on Fortimaru's agentic AI capabilities.”
