SEOUL, October 16 (AJP) - Prosecutors on Friday again sought a 30-year prison term for disgraced former President Yoon Suk Yeol in a separate appeals trial related to his botched martial law debacle in 2024.

During a hearing at the Seoul High Court, prosecutors led by Cho Eun-suk asked the court to sentence Yoon to 30 years in jail, the same sentence they sought in the first trial, over allegations that Yoon ordered the dispatch of drones to Pyongyang in October 2024 several times, about two months before his Dec. 3 declaration of martial law.

Prosecutors also sought 30 years for former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun over the same allegations.

Prosecutors argued that Yoon and Kim conspired to heighten military tensions with North Korea by sending drones into Pyongyang to create a pretext for declaring martial law, describing their alleged actions as more serious than insurrection.

In June, the lower court sentenced Yoon and Kim to 30 years in prison each, finding that they had sought to stir up military clashes with North Korea to justify martial law, putting the country's national security at risk.

Both the defendants and prosecutors appealed the ruling.

Yoon was ousted from office on April 4, 2025, after the Constitutional Court of Korea unanimously upheld his impeachment. He was sentenced to life in prison earlier this year on his main charges of insurrection and abuse of power and faces several other trials related to the martial law debacle.
