Five citizens who subdued Choi Chung-rak, a 59-year-old man who injured eight people with a knife at a large commercial facility in Incheon, have received a reward for their actions.

According to the Incheon Police Agency, the reward was given to the five citizens on the day prior to the announcement.

Among those rewarded are Shin Jung-hyun, 23, who threw a chair to directly subdue Choi, and Na Hyun-jun, 31, who helped restrain him during the incident. The other three citizens also contributed to capturing Choi and preventing him from escaping.

Police conducted the reward ceremony quietly, without public announcement, considering that one of the victims remains in a coma.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the National Police Agency are reportedly reviewing plans to grant government honors to these citizens in addition to the reward.

Earlier, Incheon Mayor Park Chan-dae requested government recognition for the citizens on Facebook, stating, “Thanks to the citizens who risked their safety to subdue the perpetrator, greater harm was prevented.”

Choi is accused of attempting to stab ten people at the C&C building in Guwol-dong, Incheon, which houses a large supermarket and a cinema, on October 13 at 1:48 p.m.

The attack resulted in injuries to eight people, including a 19-year-old woman, with one victim currently in a coma. The other two victims are reported to have sustained minor injuries.
