SEOUL, October 20 (AJP) - HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has won an order worth about 2 trillion won (US$1.4 billion) from HMM, formerly known as Hyundai Merchant Marine, to build eight liquefied natural gas (LNG) container ships, the shipbuilder said Tuesday.

The contract for the eight 13,000-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships is valued at about 1.92 trillion won, adding to HD KSOE's high-value shipbuilding backlog as HMM moves to expand its fleet of eco-friendly vessels.

The 337-meter-long vessels will have dual-fuel engines that run on either LNG or conventional marine fuel.

Two ships will be built at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and the remaining six at HD Hyundai Samho in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, with deliveries to HMM scheduled in stages through 2029.

The vessels will also be equipped with independent LNG fuel tanks manufactured by HD Hyundai Ecovina, the shipbuilder's specialized facility for eco-friendly tank production.

The latest deal is part of HMM's mid- to long-term investment strategy through 2030, under which the company plans to invest 29 trillion won to expand its fleet to 166 container ships with a combined capacity of 1.47 million TEUs and 110 bulk carriers totaling 13.52 million deadweight tons (DWTs).
