U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic reported a revenue of $16.3 billion for the first half of 2026, yet it also faced a staggering net loss of $80.7 billion. While revenue nearly increased 15-fold year-over-year, net losses surged more than six times during the same period.

On October 20, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reviewed Anthropic's draft prospectus for its initial public offering (IPO) and reported that revenue for the six months ending June 30 skyrocketed from $1.1 billion in the previous year to approximately $16.3 billion. In contrast, net losses exceeded six times the $13 billion recorded in the same period last year.

Of the $80.7 billion net loss, $72 billion stemmed from accounting costs related to fluctuations in the value of financial instruments, such as convertible bonds issued during fundraising efforts. Last year, out of a net loss of $42 billion, $34 billion was attributed to similar accounting costs. The primary operational expense, excluding these costs, was computing.

In the first half of the year, computing and infrastructure expenditures reached approximately $9 billion, nearly quadrupling from $2.3 billion in the same period last year. This figure surpasses last year's total annual expenditure of $7.33 billion.

On October 14, during a pre-IPO investor presentation at its headquarters in San Francisco, Anthropic announced that its third-quarter revenue had risen to $16.8 billion, a 45% increase from the previous quarter. The company also reported a positive adjusted operating profit for both the second and third quarters.

Anthropic plans to pursue its IPO following the U.S. midterm elections in November, aiming for a target valuation of over $2 trillion.
