SEOUL, October 27 (AJP) - South Korea is moving to overhaul its decades-old cultural arts law to reflect the rise of artificial intelligence and broader changes in the country's creative industry.

The Culture Ministry will hold a policy forum Wednesday on revisions to the Culture and Arts Promotion Act, enacted in 1972 and long regarded as the country's basic law for the sector.

The law has undergone full revisions in 1995 and 2007 as well as a series of partial amendments, but the ministry said the existing framework has not fully kept pace with changes in the arts and cultural policy environment.

Discussions will cover a comprehensive revision bill introduced in the National Assembly in July as well as several other amendment proposals currently pending before lawmakers.

The proposed changes are aimed at strengthening support for artistic creation, regional cultural ecosystems and arts-related industries, while establishing a stronger policy framework for the convergence of art and technologies including AI.

The ministry said the current law lacks sufficient legal grounds in some areas, including support for creators and artists. Feedback gathered at the forum will be delivered to lawmakers as they review the proposed revisions.

The forum will bring together government officials and experts from the policy, creation, regional culture, industry and AI-art sectors at Korea National Open University in central Seoul. The session will also be livestreamed on the ministry's YouTube channel.
